What Is I Ching Hexagram 60: 節 “Limitation” ?
Chieh is the Chinese name of the I Ching Hexagram 60. With inner and outer trigrams forming water over lake, this Hexagram is called ‘limitation’ or alternatively named ‘moderation’ or ‘articulating’.
Hexagram 60 gives wisdom on the importance of moderation. Our abilities might be limitless, but our capability to multitask and take on extra work has its limits. There is a common saying that ‘there is not enough sunlight in one day’ based on all the aspects of life that are constantly calling for our attention.
Interpretation & Meaning of Hexagram 60:
As humans, we are always striving to accomplish more. In one single day, we attempt to do many different tasks in order to feel accomplished and to prepare for the next day of tasks. Hexagram 60 gives wisdom on the importance of moderation.
It is important to set limits to our abilities. Though we think we can take on extra tasks and responsibilities, this may destroy the possibilities of success when we cannot focus on the progression.
It is very easy to become over whelmed with daily life demands. We have our own responsibilities, but then we are responsible for the well-being of others. We cannot just simply focus on ourselves, but our mind is filled with the events in others’ lives.
This pertains mostly to our children. We become so focused on our children’s progressions that we often forget about our own. It takes a whole village to raise a child but it only takes a moment to realize we are doing too much for others and not for ourselves.
This is not to say that we should neglect our children for our own benefit, it simply means that we need to find a balance and harmony in the home life.
I Ching Hexagram 60 – Personal Goals:
Be willing to set limitations in all aspects of life. There is no possible way to take on the world and complete all the tasks that are set up for you. Rushing through life will only cause a pile up of work and responsibility that then makes it difficult to progress.
It is better to produce a high quality product than to have a high quantity of a poorly made stuff. Take the time to examine your life and see what could be cut out in order to nourish other areas of life.
Getting rid of tasks that bring no joy or happiness should be discarded first. If you’re only working to appease others and not yourself, you will not be able to gain any success.
I Ching Hexagram 60 – Love:
Friends and family members often ask for favors that can be unexpected and during a difficult time. We must be willing to be honest with ourselves and with those we surround ourselves with when it comes to our own limitations. Saying ‘no’ to a situation does not mean you will miss an opportunity but it will ensure progress in the areas you need it most.
I Ching Hexagram 60 – Career & Business:
When we are very willing to succeed and put in the time and effort needed to gain great accomplishments, we may seem too eager to take on a lot of extra work. This could be an additional project at work on top of the one that is already in progress.
There could be an organization that asks for our help that is outside of work. Now we have two different areas in our lives that are asking for our demands.
THE JUDGMENT POEM
Galling limitation must not be persevered in.
THE IMAGE POEM
Water over lake: the image of LIMITATION.
Thus the superior man
Creates number and measure,
And examines the nature of virtue and correct conduct.
Hexagram 60 is full of wisdom when it comes to the quality of life. Human beings are capable of accomplishing great things, but this cannot be done when life is full of multiple tasks.
When you are distracted from what matters most in life, you waste your effort on things that will have no benefits in the end. Make sure to set limitations on what you are able to handle by being honest with yourselves and those you interact with.
