“Eh byþ for eorlum æþelinga wyn,
hors hofum wlanc, ðær him hæleþ ymb[e] welege on wicgum wrixlaþ spræce
and biþ unstyllum æfre frofur.”
“The horse is a joy to princes in the presence of warriors.
A steed in the pride of its hoofs,
when rich men on horseback bandy words about it;
and it is ever a source of comfort to the restless.”

Ehwaz – Upright Meaning
Speed of thought or deed. quick, witty, accomplishments, will to move forward, loyal, trustworthy, confident, purposeful
Ehwaz rune of the Elder Futhark represents the mighty stallion, with it’s passion and tumultuous temperament, it’s willingness and confidence to charge forward. As such, the rune represents all forms of forward motion.
It is the vessel for our ambitions, and it will drive us ever forward! When we travel in partnership, with loyal friends at our side helping us charge into the future, we are under the aspect of the Ehwaz rune.
This rune tells us we have that support, and that we in turn must be supportive of those around us. Know that pride will serve you in this venture, but let it not be too strident, lest pride bring you down with it as well.
The Ehwaz rune shows that we are in a time of progress and growth, that now is the time for us to stoke the fires and keep the forward motion going, that we may reach our goals.
It also tells us that now is a good time to form new kinship and partnerships in business that will take us towards our goals. By that same token, it is telling us that those partnerships we are already in are sound and solid.
Ehwaz – Merkstave Meaning (Reversed)
Lazy, tired, backward motion, failure, confusion, lack of enthusiast, bewildered, disoriented, fear
The Ehwaz Merkstave serves to warn us that the path forward may in fact be the path back. With the Ehwaz in darkness, we find ourselves moving backwards.
We are losing progress, and the harder we fight to move forward, the more likely we are to slip backwards further and further.
As such we should beware of bad habits, we should turn our head from things that drove us down before, and be careful not repeat the past of our vices.
It speaks of getting lost, losing ourselves on our way because we cannot see the road ahead in the darkness in which we wander.
Now is not a good time for critical thinking, or solving complex problems. Let them stand and wait before trying to, so that the situations might be better.
But do not wait too long, for the other danger of Ehwaz Merkstave is lethargy, inertia or fear overcoming us, and being drawn down by confusion.
