Blackbirds Animal Totem Symbolism & Meanings

Blackbirds Animal Totem Symbolism

As a dark and mysterious creature, blackbirds are associated with lunar symbolism. They have nocturnal awareness and the ability to use all of their senses, a practice that we would do well to master.

Like other dark animals, blackbirds as animal totems exude mystery and seriousness, keeping their secrets safe and eliciting marvel. They demand our devotion and commitment first before they even consider opening up to us. For us, this is a lesson to not give ourselves away too easily. We must protect ourselves to a certain degree.

Also, the flight of a blackbird is symbolic of with the quest for higher knowledge, a valiant journey that always leaves us better off than when we started. As they coast through the sky, the blackbirds symbolize a great deal that we on Earth strive for, such as higher intelligence, thoughts, and ideals. They are reminders to constantly try to improve ourselves and gain a better understanding of the world around us.

In addition to these sentiments, blackbirds symbols also mean more general symbolic values, such as magic, the unknown and non-obvious intuition. At night, they are easily hidden and require a well-trained eye to find them. They are deep and thoughtful creatures both physically and spiritually, and expect those who associate with it to be, as well.

The blackbird spirit guide does not make its presence known to the simple minded person. Rather, they only present themselves to those who they are sure can understand their teachings and apply them to their own lives. This bird does not provide you with any groundbreaking or revolutionary ideas and thoughts

  1. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of birds that are black, I don’t know if they are blackbirds or crows. Whereas before there were so many bluejays in my backyard, (they even nested and birthed new babies on a shelf), more and more black colored birds have been in my vision. I was so sad to see one had drowned in my pool, I found it face down in the water. I was so saddened by this, so I fished it out and buried it in my backyard. Lately, there has been an upheaval in my family, I believe it’s all for the greater good in the long run. I guess it was an omen, seeing the deceased blackbird. I went from being really upset to realizing it was on its’ own journey and its’ visit to me was part of its’ mission on this earth. This sounds so woo woo, but this is my belief system now.

  2. Thank you for this – I loved it. I adore blackbirds. I developed a particular relationship (at my mother’s house) over the course of a few months last summer (southern hemisphere) and we even developed 3 calls to each other! I hadn’t realized previously that they had mimicking abilities. I dubbed this blackbird “Sir Lancelot”, because I was in a situation where my education course had gone awry due to a whole series of events, and this was then swiftly followed by almost a year of caring for my mother. This blackbird would visit me daily – sometimes coming to sit on a chair near me for long periods of time, and we would call to each other. He really cheered me up no end and was my hero (hence his name).

They tend to come wherever I am, and then this morning, I looked out of the window and there were 4 of them (all males) together in a tree together. Their song (from August to around end of January) is one of my favourite attributes of theirs, plus their tenacity.
