10 Home Remedies For Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can be caused by a number of reasons. It could be caused by injury to soft tissues which include muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can occur because of degenerative disease. Prolonged use of laptops, tablets or smart phones can also cause shoulder pain because of the sitting posture while using these gadgets.

Once the shoulder starts hurting it may be difficult to make the pain stop. However here are some possible home remedies for shoulder pain.

The shoulders should normally rest behind the chest bone. Because of the poor posture during the use of laptops, smart phone or tablets, the shoulder tends to align in front of the chest bones. Stretching of pectoralis muscles, which is the same as the familiar “push the chest forward and pull your shoulders back” exercise is an excellent natural home remedy that helps to realign the shoulders and provide relief.

#2. Rowing Exercise

Weak Rhomboids can also cause shoulder pain. Rhomboids are the muscles between the shoulder blades which are essential to support the shoulder and hold them back. Rhomboids can be strengthened by rowing exercises.


#3. Anti-Inflammation

Inflammation which causes shoulder ache can be relieved by the use of anti-inflammatory substances. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric can be used both externally and internally for relieving inflammation. You can make paste of by mixing turmeric and coconut oil and rub this paste on the affected area. Wash it off with warm water when it gets dry. Repeat this twice a day. This will relieve you of the inflammation. Alternatively boil a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of milk and drink this. This will also help in relieving inflammation of the shoulders.

Ice is a natural remedy for inflammation. Therefore cold compress will help soothe and relieve you of inflammation. Wrap some pieces of ice in a cold towel and press the cold pack on the affected area. This will help relieve the inflammation and alleviate the neck pain.

#5. Hot Compress

Hot compress is another home remedy generally recommended if the pain is more than two days old. It helps to improve blood circulation to the affected area. It also helps in relieving tension on the muscles of the shoulder and provides relief from discomfort.

#6. Mint Leaves

Mint leaves are one of the most effective natural remedies in treating shoulder pain. Crush fresh mint leaves and apply it to the part of the shoulder which is causing discomfort. The mint acts as a coolant and it is found that it is very effective in curing shoulder pain.


#7. Diet

To get relief from shoulder pain it is important to strengthen the shoulder muscles. The diet therefore should consist of lots of fresh green vegetables and protein rich foods. You can also include walnuts, flaxseeds, soya seeds, tuna fish and salmon as these are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids help in relieving pain. This is especially recommended for people who suffer from arthritis.

Giving affected area a gentle massage with mustard oil will help ease shoulder pain. It helps in improving blood circulation and releases tension of the muscles.

#9. Rest

It is important to rest the muscles which are paining. It is not advisable to immobilize the shoulder for long. You should also not resume activities too early. The general rule is you should not do anything to increase the shoulder pain. You should gradually increase the activity of the injured shoulder.

#10. Sleeping Posture

While sleeping it is advisable to sleep with a thick pillow. When you sleep on your side the pillow must support your head so that it does not bend. It is also good to support your shoulder with a pillow so that you can keep your shoulder above your heart level. Maintaining this posture while sleeping will help in speedy recovery from shoulder pain if not immediate recovery.
