10 Top Home Remedies For Sore Tongue

Tongue sores appear in various forms. It can appear as raised areas on the tongue or small bumps or sometimes as red lumps. It can be caused by oral herpes or viral infections.

The tongue sores are very painful and also contagious. Some sores like canker sores which are not contagious are caused by weak immune system and vitamin deficiencies. Thankfully there are several natural remedies and home remedies available for this and a few of them are:


#1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a natural remedy known for its innumerable curative properties. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is also very effective in treating sore tongue. Extract aloe vera gel from its leaf and apply this gel over the affected area for cure. You can also rinse your mouth with aloe vera juice three to four times a day to get relief.

#2. Yogurt

Yogurt is made by bacterial fermentation of milk. It contains healthy bacteria and helps to balance out the bacteria in the mouth. Bacterial imbalance in the mouth is a cause for canker sores. By balancing the bacterial and eliminating the imbalance yogurt helps to heal canker sores. Eating a cup of yogurt a day helps. You may add a spoonful of honey to it for additional effect.

#3. Clove Oil

Clove oil is another home remedy that is helpful in both relieving pain and also in the healing process of the sores. Clove oil contains eugenol. Eugenol is an effective pain killer and helps to relieve pain form the sores and the curative properties of clove oil helps to cure the sore. Swish some warm salt water in your mouth to clean up the area of the sore. Mix some a few drops of clove oil with some olive oil. Soak cotton ball in this mixture and apply it on the sore and keep it for some time and you will get a numbing relief.

#4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These properties make it a useful home remedy for treating sore tongue. Just dip a cotton swab in coconut oil and apply the oil with the help of this swab to the affected area. Apply a fairly thick layer of coconut oil on the core as it tends to melt and thin out. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of coconut oil will relieve you of the pain and also helps to cure the sore.

#5. Cayenne Pepper

Capsaicin contained in cayenne pepper helps to numb the area of the pore and relieve you of the pain. Make a paste of cayenne pepper in water and apply this paste to the affected area with a cotton ball. It will initially cause an irritation but soon start taking effect and relieves you of the pain.

#6. Honey

Honey is a natural home remedy for sore tongue. It can relieve the pain and inflammation of the sore tongue because of its curative properties. Apply a little honey on the affected part of the tongue three or four times a day. You may even make a paste of turmeric and honey and apply this to sores. Leave it there for a few minutes and rinse off with warm water. Do this three or four times a day for relief.


#7. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a good remedy for sore tongue. Baking soda has got anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve inflammation and can sooth the pain. Make a paste of baking soda in water and apply this paste to the affected area. Rinse with warm water after about a minute. Alternately you can make a solution of baking soda and water and rinse your mouth with this solution a few times a day.

#8. Salt

Salt is an antiseptic and is an effective natural remedy for sore tongue. It helps to reduce inflammation, pain and is effective in preventing infection. Add some salt to lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with this solution three to four times a day. You may even try to put a little salt directly on the sore which helps to dry it out.

#9. Licorice

Licorice is an herb with a number of healing properties. This herb has anti-inflammatory properties and they also have a soothing effect. Just make a paste of licorice powder in water. Apply this paste directly on the sore with a cotton swab. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and rinse with warm water. Repeat this a few times a day. You can even make a mouth wash of this powder and rinse your mouth three or four time a day with this mouth wash. Note: People with hypertension are advised against use of licorice.

#10. Alum

Alum is an antiseptic and it also has astringent properties. These properties help alum to reduce pain and inflammation. The astringent properties of alum help it to remove moisture from the sore and speed up the healing process. Apply a little alum powder on the sore and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Repeat this the next day if required. Do not swallow the alum. This will help in the healing of the sore.
