What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years, and one that is still used today all over the world. Acupuncture is much like acupressure.

Both of these types of Chinese body therapies use the same points on a person’s body to relieve pain and illness, but acupressure doesn’t use needles and acupuncture does. The needles are very thin, and many people do not feel more than a slight prick when they are receiving an acupuncture treatment.

To put it in very simple terms, acupuncture therapy is putting small needles in certain parts of your body. This includes from your hands to your toes, so that they can prick just the right spots in your body to re-balance your chi. This is what the ancient Chinese acupuncture creators thought was a person’s positive energy flow. While there is no proof that chi exists, acupuncture can still help a person in other ways.

How to Practice Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is not something that you can do at home or by yourself in general. If you want to get acupuncture done properly, then you should see a professional. Acupuncture is done in different places depending on what kind of internal problem you have.

For instance, stomach problems would be treated differently than neck pain. Depending on where your pain is, acupuncture will be applied in different places. Often, more than one needle is put in a place to help more. Sometimes people who get acupuncture treatments feel a slight poke, burn, or itch.

Acupuncture providers claim that this is what it feels like when a person’s chi is successfully reached and set back in a positive motion.  An acupuncturist will want to cause this sort of sensation in the areas that will cure your pain. The point of acupuncture is to get your chi unblocked and flowing freely again.

Sometimes an acupuncturist will turn the needles, put them in a little more, heat them up, or use electricity to make this happen. Although this may sound weird and a little painful, many people find it to be more relaxing than painful.

Health Benefits of Acupuncture

While it cannot be proven that chi is real, or that it has an affect on people’s health, acupuncture itself has been proven to work and relieve pain. Acupuncture is said to work very well to reduce nausea in chemotherapy patients and pregnant women.

Acupuncture is also used in postoperative patients, stroke victims, and people will recurring pain for other reasons. Many people use acupuncture simply to reduce stress and tension in their lives. It is a great thing to do if you can afford it to reduce stress. Reducing stress is probably one of the best reasons to get acupuncture done if you are not ill. If you are ill, then it can help with pain and nausea, which is also great.

Other Acupuncture Facts

While the thought of putting needles in your body may be scary, many people overreact or overestimate how big the needles actually are. Acupuncture needles are not like the needles used to give people vaccinations. They are very thin and small. There is very little risk of getting hurt. In rare situations, infection can occur when using dirty needles, but that is highly unlikely to happen if you go to a professional. You shouldn’t pass up an opportunity for acupuncture just because you are nervous.

Acupuncturists need to be licensed to be able to help. To be licensed they need to go through a lot of training. So you can be sure that they know what they are doing. You never know, acupuncture may even help a person to lose their fear of needles, or at least relax it, or them, a bit.
