Miguel de la Madrid alias Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado was a Mexican politician born in 1934 and died in 2012. Also, he became president of Mexico in 1982 and held the position till 1988. Sadly, his country suffered an economic crisis during that period. The percentage of underemployment sored high and income also declined. The law graduate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) would later teach law at the same University. His first entry in government was in 1965, serving in the treasury.
Early Life and Education
Miguel de la Madrid was born in Colima Mexico on December 12, 1934. His parents were Miguel de la Madrid Castro and Alicia Hurtado Oldenbourg. Sadly, he lost his father, a notable lawyer when he was only two following an assassination. Enrique Octavio de la Madrid was his grandfather. He was Colima’s governor.
De la Madrid attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) where he studied law. He would later graduate with his bachelor’s degree. Thereafter, he studied Public Administration in the U.S. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was then awarded a master's degree.
De la Madrid began his career in the National Bank of Foreign Commerce then Bank of Mexico. Afterward, he taught law at UNAM. In 1965, he began serving at the Secretariat of Finance. Later, he was employed by a petroleum company owned by the state of Mexico, Petróleos Mexicanos. He worked there from 1970 till 1972.
In 1963, De la Madrid became a member of Partido Revolucionario Institucional; PRI (the Institutional Revolutionary Party). It was the ruling party of Mexico. In 1965 he served in the Treasury, a position marking his first entry to government. Thereafter, he also offered his services in many economic bureaucratic posts.
Afterward, between 1976 and 1882, he became the planning and budget minister. This was during the administration of Pres. José López Portillo’s.
President of Mexico
From 1982 till 1988, De la Madrid was the president of Mexico. During that time, Mexico went through an economic crisis. However, it was not entirely his fault because he inherited the economic crisis from the previous administration.
He survived the attempted assassination in May 1984. However, many guests and officials were injured. In 1988, Carlos Salinas de Gortari succeeded him as president. Thereafter, Fondo de Cultura Econóomica appointed his as director-general in 1990.
De la Madrid was married to Paloma Cordero and had five children.
At the age of 77, Miguel de la Madrid died. This was on April 1, 2012, in Mexico City, Mexico.
