10 Home Remedies For Cradle Caps
Cradle cap is flakey, dry skin, a thick yellowish or brownish scaling or crusting patches, on the baby’s head. It does not bother the baby. It is also not contagious. It may last for about six months to twelve months and sometimes a little longer than twelve months. It occurs in the first few months of life. The exact cause for this may not be known yet, but some experts feel that the overstimulation of the baby’s oil-producing glands results in cradle cap. Some natural remedies and home remedies are available for this sickness, and a few of them are.
#1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a simple and natural remedy which works very effectively for cradle cap. Just apply coconut oil to the baby scalp covering all the affected areas. After a while gently comb the baby’s head with a fine-toothed comb and wash it with a mild shampoo to remove loose flakes. Dry with a soft towel.
#2. Mineral Oil
Mineral oils are also effective for treating cradle cap. Apply mineral oil on the baby’s head and allow for on the scalp for a few hours. Wash with gentle baby shampoo. While washing gently rub the baby’s scalp with a washcloth in a circular motion. This will help to loosen the flakes and remove them easily.
#3. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is effective an effective home remedy for cradle cap but toxic. Therefore dilute one part of tea tree oil with ten parts of olive oil and apply this mixture to the baby’s head covering the affected area. Leave it for fifteen minutes for the flakes to loosen. Remove the flakes gently with a fine-toothed comb. Please note that tea tree oil is volatile and therefore you must avoid its contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.
#4. Olive Oil
Olive oil is another natural remedy to cure cradle cap. Apply this to the baby’s head and let it sit for about fifteen minutes. After soaking for fifteen minutes in olive oil, flakes can easily be removed using a fine-toothed comb.
#5. Almond Oil
This is another effective natural home remedy for treating cradle cap. Apply almond oil to baby’s scalp covering the affected area. Allow it to soak for 15 to 20 minutes. The flake soaked in almond oil can easily be removed by gently combing with a fine-toothed comb.
#6. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of the best natural home remedies for treating this malady. Dilute one part of apple cider vinegar with two parts of water and apply this to the affected area. Let it soak for ten minutes and wash it off. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar fights dead skin and helps to remove cradle cap.
Calendula is an herbal remedy for treating this malady. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of calendula herb will provide relief from cradle cap. Apply calendula creme to the affected part to get relief from cradle cap.
#8. Shea Butter
This is a natural remedy for getting relief from cradle cap. Apply shea butter on the baby’s scalp to the affected area. The scalp easily absorbs this. It does not leave any grease nor does it clog the pores of the skin and therefore prevent the development of dandruff. After about twenty minutes of application comb with a fine-toothed comb to remove the extra flakes.
Vaseline is another remedy for cradle cap which is simple. Apply Vaseline to the baby’s scalp and leave it overnight. This will render the scales soft which can easily be removed with a toothbrush.
