10 Great Home Remedies For Laryngitis

What Causes Laryngitis?

Laryngitis, or a sore throat, is a common, irritating affliction that seems to strike at the very worst of times.

Drinking lots of water, staying hydrated and avoiding diuretics such as caffeine and alcohol can help prevent the onset of or the aggravation of a sore throat. Here are our top ten home remedies for Laryngitis.

10 Great Home Remedies For Laryngitis

#1. Honey

A tried and tested natural remedy for sore irritated throats, pure honey helps to sooth the larynx and reduce swelling.

Because honey contains both antiseptic and antibacterial properties, it has been known to help speed the healing process. Ingested straight, or diluted in warm water, honey makes a great sweet cure for the sore throat.

#2. Salt

Salt water is an excellent natural remedy with proven healing power. The salt helps to promote healing and reduce nasal inflammation.

Stir salt into warm water and gargle gently. By allowing the salt to hit the back of the throat, it will help to heal the effected area and reduce irritation causing laryngitis. The salt does not need to be ingested.

#3. Vinegar

Vinegar is a great home remedy to kill off bacteria and throat infection which may be causing a sore throat. Vinegar’s acidic nature is what makes it such an excellent germ-killer, as many bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment.

Like with salt, vinegar should be rinsed around the mouth and throat rather than directly ingested. While straight vinegar is effective, it can be harsh so diluting it with water, or using apple cider vinegar in place of white vinegar makes the solution more palatable without reducing the benefits.

#4. Lemon

Keeping your throat moist will help to sooth the rough dry feel brought on by laryngitis. Eating lemon, or drinking lemon juice increases saliva production, helping to lubricate the throat.

The natural acidity found in lemons also helps kill off infection causing bacteria and speeds the healing process. Lemons can be eaten directly, or squeezed for their juice. Due to the extreme sour nature of lemons, it is usually best to dilute the juice with warm water, or alternatively, add lemon to hot tea.

#5. Eucalyptus Oil

Known increasingly for it’s health benefits, eucalyptus oil is a great way to combat Laryngitis. As eucalyptus oil contains antibacterial and antiviral  properties it is great for staving off infection and killing bacterial cells which cause throat irritation and inflammation.

#6. Garlic

Garlic, too, is a great way to kill off infection. As garlic naturally contains Allicin, a bacteria-fighting agent, it has been widely used for it’s healing properties for various ailments. The most effective way of harnessing the healing power of garlic is to ingest the oils directly.

Crushing or slicing open a clove of garlic will release the oils and juices. Slice the garlic clove down the middle and use as a lozenge, sucking the juices out.

#7. Ginger

The anti-inflammatory nature of ginger makes it an excellent home remedy for laryngitis. Ginger can help sooth an irritated throat as well as reduce swelling in the larynx. Ginger tea is a great way to gain all the benefits of ginger root. You can make your own by placing a few slices of fresh ginger in boiling water to steep.

#8. Onion Syrup

Onions are one of the best natural remedies known as an anti-inflammatory, which means they are a great cure for laryngitis and sore throats. By reducing the swelling of the larynx and saliva glands, onions help to eliminate pain.

The onions can be sliced and simmered in water to create a syrup-like liquid. This syrup should then be added to warm water before drinking.

#9. Slippery Elm

Slippery Elm, as the name suggests, contains a gel-like smooth substance which is ideal for soothing the irritation brought on by laryngitis.

While the gel itself calms the throat, slippery elm also helps to stimulate saliva production, a natural throat lubricant, which not only helps alleviate the pain of a laryngitis, but speed healing and recovery.

#10. Hydrate

Sometimes the simplest natural home remedies are the best. For sore throats and laryngitis, the key irritant is often dry environments. Ensure you drinks lots of water, and remain in a humid area.

Avoiding dust and alternatively breathing in warm humid air – for example steam – helps to sooth the irritated area.

This also means avoiding diuretics such as caffeine and alcohol, both of which can irritate the throat further and also dehydrate the body, preventing healing and causing pain in the throat and larynx.
