How To Delay Dementia?

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is really a broad category of brain afflictions which result in any loss of the person’s cognitive ability. This loss could be slight or it could result in the need for external care options. Sometimes it is the result of a traumatic brain injury other times it is the onset of diseases like Alzheimer’s.

The most common form of dementia is called Alzheimer’s disease, which represents some 75 percent of dementia cases. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but research is heading that direction. The disease itself is a form of dementia which worsens until it eventually leads to death.

Symptoms of Dementia

The early symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s are difficulty remembering current events. This is short term memory loss and except for the cases of extreme brain damage there is no reason for a healthy individual to have problems in this area. Unless they are exhibiting the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The only way to get a definitive answer as to whether you have dementia or Alzheimer’s is to get a biopsy done of some brain tissue.

Ways To Delay Dementia

1. Maintain Active Lifestyle

Some of the ways a person can avoid or prolong the longevity of their brain is to keep an active lifestyle, which is more than just solving a crossword puzzle. The following steps could help you keep your brain fit enough to prolong the life of your brain.

The first thing to remember is that if your brain is not doing anything then its wasting itself. You brain needs activities to keep it “fit” in a sense. The best way you can exercise your brain is to stay physically fit, eat a healthy diet, provide mental stimulation, get quality sleep and have an active social life.

2. Mental Stimulation

Providing quality mental stimulation can be done in a series of ways. One way is to learn something new, whether it is a skill like wood working or trying a new language this exercises your brain into functioning at its top level.

Practicing memorization can also be key to keeping your brain mentally fit, you can do this by trying to remember your grocery list in sections, eventually as you memorize more and more you will be able to recall things from earlier on.

This helps especially with short term memory. Practice the five w’s the who, what, when, where, and why. Keeping a mental journal of what has gone in your day can help you remember it later on.

Another key way to keep your mind fit is to play games, yes games. Strategy games provide a great workout for your mind and help you to remember associations between two subjects.

Sudoku is one of the best games you can play to strengthen you mind, the puzzle game is hard enough to challenge your mind with number and letter association, but easy enough that even small children can play the game.

Finally your brain is an important tool, without it we could not function, so keeping it mentally fit is key. Doing just a few things a day could result in a lifetime of rewards, by lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s and or dementia.
