Cholesterol is a wax like substance in our bodies that is designed to protect the nerves. There is a caveat here and that is that if there is too much cholesterol in the body it can start to build up in the arteries and so reduces the blood flow to the heart. This can result in a heart attack or a stroke. This can be something that will occur almost immediately or an event that will occur within the next ten years. How soon this may happen will depend on the levels of cholesterol, and their effects. It may also be affect by the family history of the individual.

There are three readings involved in knowing your total cholesterol. There is the HDL (high density lipoproteins) which is the type that we want to see in the body as it is generally protective of the heart. Then there is the LDL which is the cholesterol that is a common cause of blockages in the arteries.  Both need to be controlled but it is the LDL that will cause your physician to try to get the level down as soon as possible. And there is the total cholesterol.

A heart attack is a situation in which a portion of the muscle that forms the heart is not able to get enough oxygen because there is no blood flow. This can actually cause the death of part of the heart muscle. This is an event that takes place when the blood flow is interrupted by fat or another type of blockage. There are measures that can be taken to help avoid heart attack and stroke.

The Farmingham Heart Study, is an excellent guide to the proper way to avoid heart issues. Something as simple as good diet and exercise such as a daily walk van really help.  Some of the risk factors that are considered when looking at heart attack risk are: age, gender, total cholesterol, both good and bad cholesterol levels, blood pressure and smoking.
