10 Natural Home Remedies For Edema
Excess liquid trapped in tissues for various reasons causes swelling. The swelling caused by fluid accumulation is known as Edema. Edema may occur for various reasons. It may be a result of fluid leaking through damaged capillaries, pregnancy, reduced levels of albumin or owing to kidney disorder, malfunctioning of the liver, hypertension etc. It can also occur owing to excessive salt consumption. Edema may also occur due to sprain or even insect bites.
Edema manifests itself in several forms like swelling and/or puffiness of tissues under the skin, stretching of the skin (the skin may become shiny when it stretches). Swelling becomes evident if a dimple is formed when the affected area is pressed for a while and released. Here are some home remedies for edema.
#1. Cucumber Juice
A glass of cucumber juice everyday is an excellent home remedy that will help is controlling edema. Cucumber juice helps in detoxification of the system and helps in healing of edema.
Drinking about eight to ten glasses of water is a good natural remedy that will help. Water helps in cleaning the system by draining toxins from the system. It also gets rid of the excess fluid from the body thus helping in the treatment of edema.
#3. Exercise/ Movement
Exercise or moving the muscles in the edema affected area in the body will help in pumping excess fluid back to the heart. It is advisable to consult a doctor and resort only the exercises recommended by the doctor.
You can move the fluid by gravity. Just lie down and hold the affected part above the level of the heart for short periods several times a day will help the excess fluid to flow towards the heart and thus will help in relieving you from edema.
Compression is a natural home remedy that helps in preventing collection of fluid accumulation in the affected parts of the body which are compressed. There are certain aids like compression stockings or compression gloves to achieve this. Using these aids in the affected parts of the body helps in getting relief from edema. This has to be done as advised by the doctor.
#6. Salt Intake
Reduction of salt intake is one of the main natural remedies in controlling edema. Salt consumption should be kept low enough to limit sodium intake to 2000 mg per day. Consuming salty food has a tendency to worsen the edema.
The leaves of dandelion are rich in a number of vitamins and minerals. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin D in addition to minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese and iron. Drinking two to three cups of dandelion green tea will reduce swelling, helps to flush toxins and cures edema.
#8. Mustard Seed/Oil
Mustard oil can be heated slightly and application of the warm mustard oil on the affected area will reduce swelling. Alternatively some mustard seeds may be soaked in water for some time and dipping the affected part in this water will also help in relieving edema.
#9. Coriander Seeds
Coriander seeds can also be used as a natural home remedy to treat edema effectively. Boil water and add a couple of coriander seeds to the boiling water. Drinking this concoction helps in relieving edema.
#10. Cold Pack
Edema caused by sprain of joints may be treated effectively by applying a cold pack on the affected part or by applying and ice pack on the affected area.
A word of caution: Pulmonary edema, whose symptoms are coughing/wheezing/lighted headedness etc must only be treated under supervision and advice of a physician.
