Causes Of Snoring
While snoring does not usually bother the snorer most of the time, it often bothers their partner. Snoring or Apnea isn’t really harmful, but it can get annoying, especially after a whole night of it.
Sleepless nights, at least the ones caused by snoring, doesn’t help a relationship. Sometimes snoring can even be hard from other rooms in a house. If you want to stop snoring, or if you know someone who you want to stop snoring, then these home remedies could be helpful for you.
There are many causes of snoring, and therefore, there are many ways to combat the annoyance. Snoring can be caused by old age, the position you sleep in, how your nose is shaped, sinus problems, smoking, drinking too much, certain medications, and being overweight.
You can do more to change your snoring habits just by changing how you live while you’re awake more than when you’re actually asleep.
#1. Lose Weight
Many people strive to lose weight, so why not consider the added benefit of stopping snoring along with it. Diet and exercise are great ways to lose weight.
If your partner is the one who needs to quit snoring, find a polite way to say that they might want to consider dropping some pounds. Tell them all about the health benefits of weight loss, and tell them that you’ll be less annoyed with them if they really do start to snore less.
#2. Quit Smoking
Quitting smoking is the best home remedy to stop snoring. Although, quitting smoking is harder to do than said. Quitting will make it easier to breathe, and also make it easier not to snore.
If you’re the one snoring, ask for help. Try to get some friends to quit with you. If your partner is the one smoking, encourage them and support them as much as you can as they try to quit.
#3. Drink Less Alcohol
Drinking alcohol, especially right before bed, can loosen the muscles in your throat, causing you to snore more. Maybe make it a point not to drink a couple of hours before you go to bed. This little change can make a big difference.
If your partner is the one who needs to drink less, join them in their sobriety to support them. They shouldn’t have to feel like they’re going through this alone.
#4. Avoid Sleeping Pills
Like alcohol, sleeping pills relax your throat muscles. If you can manage to sleep without the pills, then you should. Other medications may loosen the muscles as well.
If snoring is a big problem, then talk to your doctor about which medications you can get rid of or if you can switch to another medication that won’t cause snoring.
#5. Sleep On Your Side
When you go to bed, try to fall asleep on your side. If you end up on your back anyway, put something on your back to make it uncomfortable, so that you won’t want to sleep on your back.
If you must, move the bed up against the wall and sleep so that you are so close to the wall and your partner that you cannot roll on your back. While this may be uncomfortable, it is also a good natural remedy for not snoring.
#6. Get A Humidifier
If you don’t already know, humidifiers put moisture into the air. Sometimes snoring is caused by dry air that irritates the inside of your throat and nose. Humidifiers can be bought just about anywhere. If you can’t find one in a store, then there are surely some that you can purchase online.
#7. Stay Hydrated
Just like humidifiers help keep the air more moist, drinking a lot of water is a great natural home remedy to help you to keep your throat from getting dry. Drinking a lot of water is beneficial to your health anyway, so why not enjoy the added bonus of a better night’s sleep as well?
#8. Clear Your Nose
Having a stuffy nose can lead to breathing and snoring problems while you’re sleeping. Blow your nose before bed or find some other ways to clear your nose. You’ll be able to breathe and sleep better by doing this as well.
It may sound a little silly, but singing is one of the best natural remedies to strengthen throat muscles. When snoring is caused by weak muscles, this may be the easiest fix. Sing a little before bed, during the day, or just as often as you feel comfortable with.
Who knows? You might even find that you have a talent for it. If your partner is terrible at singing, this might not be the right solution for you.
#10. Change Your Bed Sheets
Sometimes allergens are the cause of snoring. By changing your bed sheets and pillows regularly and keeping your bedroom clean you can stop some snoring. As an added bonus, your sheets will smell better after a wash, which may even help you fall asleep faster.
I hope that you find these natural home remedies helpful and that you or your partner can finally fix their snoring problem!
